About This Project
The Marchbanks home in Greer needed a primary shower that finally matched the rest of the house. We delivered a cave-style walk-in built around large-format porcelain slabs run continuously across the walls and floor, with subtle grout lines so the eye doesn't catch the seams. A built-in tile bench wraps the back corner with a thin hidden shelf above it for shampoo, conditioner, and a razor — no surface-mounted shelves to clutter the lines. A waterproof shower system protects everything behind the tile, with epoxy grout on the wet walls for stain resistance and low maintenance. The fixtures pair a wall-mounted rainfall head with a separate handheld wand and a thermostatic valve, and the room is closed in with a frameless glass enclosure and a clear glass door. The surrounding bathroom floor is a wide stone-look tile that flows from the shower threshold out across the whole room. Net effect: dramatic, calm, and very low-maintenance.
Marchbanks Family's Goals
A primary shower that feels like a high-end hotel — dramatic stone walls, no clutter, fully waterproof behind the tile, and low maintenance day to day.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes this a cave-style shower?
Cave-style refers to running the same large-format slab continuously across the walls and floor, with minimal visible grout lines and a built-in tile bench — so the shower reads as one carved stone room rather than a tile grid.
How is the shower waterproofed?
A complete sheet-membrane waterproofing system (Wedi or Schluter) goes on the studs and floor before any tile is set, and epoxy grout is used on the wet walls for stain resistance and easier cleaning.
How long did the cave-style shower build take?
The Marchbanks project in Greer ran three to four weeks from demo day to final walk-through — a typical timeline for a build-from-scratch custom shower with bench framing, full waterproofing, large-format slab tile, and a custom-fit frameless glass enclosure.
