Tub-to-Shower Conversion Timeline: Day-by-Day Breakdown

One of the most common questions we get at Upstate Bath Renewal is: "How long will this actually take?" Here's a realistic, day-by-day breakdown of a standard tub-to-shower conversion so you know exactly what to expect.

Before Day 1: Pre-Construction

Before any tools come out, we've already done our homework. Your tile is ordered and on-site, fixtures are confirmed, the glass enclosure is measured and ordered, and we've reviewed the plumbing access. This prep phase typically takes 1–2 weeks after you sign the contract.

Day 1: Demolition

The existing tub, surround, and any damaged substrate are removed. We inspect for hidden water damage, mold, or structural issues behind the walls. If the subfloor is solid, we move forward. If there's rot or damage, we address it now — better to fix it than to tile over a problem.

Day 2: Plumbing and Substrate

The drain is repositioned (if needed), the new shower pan or drain system is installed, and cement board or a waterproof membrane goes up on the walls. This is the invisible but critical layer — proper waterproofing prevents every problem down the road.

We use Schluter Kerdi or RedGard waterproofing systems on every shower we build. This creates a fully waterproof envelope behind your tile — no moisture reaches the wall studs.

Day 3–4: Tile Installation

This is where the transformation happens. Walls are tiled first, then the floor. If you've chosen a pattern like herringbone, expect the wall tile phase to take a full two days. Straight-stack or subway patterns go faster. Grout is applied after the tile mortar cures.

Day 5: Grout, Caulk, and Fixtures

Grout is applied and wiped clean. Silicone caulk seals the corners and transitions. The showerhead, valve trim, and any accessories (like a hand-held shower wand) are installed. Everything is tested for leaks.

Day 6–7: Glass and Final Touches

The glass enclosure is installed (if ordered — some homeowners prefer a curtain initially and add glass later). Final caulking around the glass, cleaning, and a walkthrough with you to make sure everything looks and works exactly right.

Total Timeline: 5–7 Business Days

A standard conversion runs 5–7 business days. More complex builds — larger showers, benches, multiple niches, steam systems — can take 7–10 days. We always give you a clear timeline before work begins. Learn more about our shower conversion process and pricing.
